Bulk Chemicals & Resins

The Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company (W&LE) handles thousands of carloads of chemicals and plastic resins and related products every year for over twenty five shippers and receivers. Northeast Ohio in particular is a frequent destination for many polymer shipments for molding companies, blenders, packagers, and transload operations. Shipments in covered hoppers include ABS plastics, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride.

Customers who do not have direct rail service can benefit from rail to truck transload through three major W&LE transload partners that provide crossdocking, contract bulk packaging, gaylord packaging, mixing, and blending among other services – ASW Global, Cotter Merchandise Storage, and Peoples Services:

  • ASW Global (www.aswglobal.com) located in Mogadore, Ohio, has multiple tracks with storage and handling for 115 covered hoppers in addition to 500,000 square feet of warehouse space for storage, packaging, and blending.
  • Cotter Merchandise Storage located in Akron, Ohio, has multiple tracks with storage and handling for 150 covered hoppers in addition to a 366,000 square foot warehouse for storage, packaging, and blending.
  • Peoples Services (www.peoplesservices.com) has two facilities on W&LE: Barberton, Ohio, and Massillon, Ohio. The Massillon operation has a 100,000 square foot warehouse suitable for storage, blending, and packaging with over 25 rail car spots available. Massillon also has a truck scale and truck wash. The Barberton operation has fifty rail car spots for storage and rail to truck and truck to rail transloading of plastic resins and chemicals, steaming capability, spill containment, and has a truck scale and truck wash. Additionally Peoples operates their own truck fleet of pneumatic tank trucks.

Customers who desire to perform their own transloading or to build a rail-served facility on W&LE can learn more about the wide variety of sites and tracks available by contacting us at development@wlerwy.com.
