Locomotive and Freight Car Repair
Our Mechanical Departments at the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company are responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance of our rolling stock, including our locomotives and freight cars. These employees inspect, test, repair, and rebuild this fleet to ensure safe and reliable operations.
These roles involve fabrication, welding, structural repairs, and mechanical troubleshooting, primarily in a shop environment. However, mechanical employees may find themselves working outdoors in various weather conditions to keep our fleet operational.
Mechanical Careers
Locomotive Technicians
Locomotive Technicians inspect, test, maintain, and repair all aspects of our diesel-electric locomotives, ensuring compliance with federal and operational standards. This two-year apprenticeship combines course work with hands-on training to develop expertise in diesel engine mechanics, electrical systems, and diagnostics to keep our powerful locomotive fleet running safely and efficiently.
Seniority determines shift assignments, job placements, and certain advancement opportunities. With experience, Locomotive Technicians can advance to Lead Technician, Forman, or other leadership roles.
Carman
Carman inspect, test, maintain, and repair the freight cars on our railroad to ensure they meet the federal and operational standards. Responsibilities include structural repairs, welding, air brake testing, and re-railing services. Car shop employees begin as apprentices, participating in a two-year program that provides employees with the training necessary to develop expertise in all aspects of freight car repair.
Seniority determines shift selection, job placements, and certain advancement opportunities. Experienced Carman may advance into roles such as Car Inspector, working in the various rail yards across our system, or joining wrecking operations, performing field repairs and re-railing services.
